What do you do when a loved one asks to go home—even when they’re already sitting in their living room? 🏡
For anyone caring for someone living with dementia, this is one of those moments that can leave you feeling completely stuck. Many of us will naturally say try to correct them ("You are home!"), but we are just as likely to have learned the hard way, that facts are rarely comforting. Truth is, they often lead to agitation or distress for everyone involved. In my latest Medium article (which I’ve also added to our "The Gentle Act of Dementia Response" to the Articles section under Classroom), I break down what’s really happening beneath that phrase and how a simple shift in response can change the entire energy of the room. Before you read it, I’d love to hear from this group: When your person with dementia expresses a deep desire for "home" or safety, what is one word, phrase, or gentle connection that has helped you soften that moment? Whether it’s a quiet cup of tea, validating the feeling behind the request, or shifting focus to a favorite memory, share your go-to approaches in the comments. Let's build a mini-library of wisdom right here for anyone needing a little inspiration today. 👇

🫶🏽 A place to offer support to others
Share challenges where you are open to support. Remember to be respectful. Judgement of others has no place in the Speaking With Care community.
Good Moment Hunting
If you're on my email list, you'll know that today's email is about finding something familiar. While I'm not caring for our mom directly, I can share something my sister told me last week. She learned that black cherry ice cream is my mom's favourite. We didn't know that. Now we do. Want to get on the list? Subscribe
