A Ritual to Read to Each Other
If you don’t know the kind of person I am
and I don’t know the kind of person you are
a pattern that others made may prevail in the world
and following the wrong god home we may miss our star.
For there is many a small betrayal in the mind,
a shrug that lets the fragile sequence break
sending with shouts the horrible errors of childhood
storming out to play through the broken dyke.
And as elephants parade holding each elephant’s tail,
but if one wanders the circus won’t find the park,
I call it cruel and maybe the root of all cruelty
to know what occurs but not recognize the fact.
And so I appeal to a voice, to something shadowy,
a remote important region in all who talk:
though we could fool each other, we should consider—
lest the parade of our mutual life get lost in the dark.
For it is important that awake people be awake,
or a breaking line may discourage them back to sleep;
the signals we give — yes or no, or maybe —
should be clear: the darkness around us is deep.
~ William E. Stafford
A friend and podcast guest shared this with me. Even and awake person can fall back to sleep, be lured into the default polarity that has shaped much of humanity - "us" .... and "them".
Even the good guy/bad guy rift carries some conflict in that (as we probably know), it isn't a matter of some black and white morality. In what is happening in the world today, it might be well to remember what each of us are capable of in either camp. To know our light we must be very familiar with and symbiotic with our dark. Love your brother but know how and when you have to cut someone's head off... without ranker of course (subtle eye roll).
So taking this out to the mythopoetic and esoteric, when I/we walk into the fray we do so with an open heart that is genuinely filled with sadness that the conditions still exist that make that action necessary (or seemingly so).
As for me, I love to connect with folks in realtime and have visceral and physical interactions and exchanges of ideas, space and sweat. Even my own online community is about bringing this into reality.
