I work for a Carbon Fiber Manufacturer and I am assisting in a project for an Automated Packaging Cell. We are using an outside company to help design it with our input. We use a vision system to look for defects in our bobbins and while in a meeting yesterday, one of their engineers asked what a specific defect was. We call it a dogbone defect where the center of the fiber being wound is tighter than the edges.
We didn't have any pictures of actual product to show what we were talking about so I jumped into SolidWorks and was able to whip up a very simple model showing what we were talking about.
I started with a two circles and was able to make an extruded core, and then using the line tool and the 3 point arc, I was able to draw one half of the defect and use the revolved boss to make a 3D model.
I could not have done this before I started this course so I consider this a win in the fact that I was able to do it so quickly, even if it was simple.
