What have you been using to navigate?
Imagine that somewhere inside you is a map.
Not a map someone handed you all at once.
A map that has been gathering reference points throughout your life.
Every experience.
Every memory.
Everything you have felt.
Everything you have seen.
Everything you have come to believe about yourself, other people, and the world around you.
But here is something I have been curious about lately:
Do you know where all of your reference points came from?
Some may have come from your own lived experience.
Some may have come from something painful.
Some may have been created while you were simply trying to survive, protect yourself, belong, or make sense of something you didn't yet understand.
And some may not have begun with your experience at all.
Maybe someone told you:
People can't be trusted.
You have to work hard to be successful.
Don't be selfish.
Family comes first.
You should always finish what you start.
You need to be careful.
That's just how life works.
Maybe it came from a parent.
A teacher.
A relationship.
A religion.
A culture.
A book.
An expert.
Or simply something enough people around you agreed was true that eventually it became a reference point on your map.
And then you kept navigating from it.
Not because you consciously chose it.
Not because it is necessarily wrong.
Maybe you've simply never stopped to look at it.
That is the part I find fascinating.
What happens when we pause long enough to look at the reference points we've been using to navigate?
Not to erase them.
Not to judge the person we were when they were created.
Not even to decide immediately whether they're still true.
Just to become curious.
Where did this come from?
What did I experience that made this meaningful to me?
Is this something I know through my own experience—or something I learned to believe?
Is this reference point still relevant to the life I am experiencing today?
Maybe that's one of the places wisdom begins.
Not simply because we had the experience.
But because we finally gave ourselves enough of a pause to reflect upon what the experience has shown us.
So here's today's Explorer question:
What is one reference point you have been using to navigate that you've never stopped to ask where it came from?
Don't try to change it.
Just notice it.
