My very first DEKA FIT!
This past weekend, I competed in my very first DEKA FIT in SoCal with my teammate, . If you’re not familiar, DEKA FIT is an indoor functional fitness race combining 10 exercise stations with 5K of total running, broken into 500 meters before each station. The stations test movements like rowing, sled pushes, and dumbbell carries, all timed from start to finish.
I have completed in countless DEKA STRONGs, which is the event with the same 10 stations but without any running. One year ago, I wasn’t running at all. Zero miles. Perimenopause took its toll. My body hated me. I couldn’t even run a 14:00/mile without my hamstrings and glutes bothering me. It was miserable to run, so I just stopped and focused on other types of cardio (row, ski, bike). I had stopped running for almost an entire year before I picked it back up 11 months ago.
What changed? I took some time to figure out what makes my body happy. I stopped doing half-assed double workouts and focused on 1 very intentional workout. I added more Zone 2 cardio workouts, mobility & stretching into my weekly routine. I eat like an athlete and shoot for 7-8 hours of sleep a night. It’s been hard but I knew my hard work would eventually pay off. I learned that running intervals and fewer miles a week is better for my body, specifically. Plus, a little HRT didn’t hurt either.
So, ask me how the FIT went?
It was awesome! We finished 6th in our age group! Our running pace was faster than expected. My legs didn’t hurt. Our transitions between stations and reps went smoothly. We felt strong all the way to the end. I’m proud of our results!
Was it a prefect race? Absolutely not. It never is. We waited in the start line queue for over an hour and when we got to Zone 8, we unknowingly push/pulled the tank on the men’s resistance. It happens. But, you know what? Despite all of that we still kicked ass. I felt strong on the men’s resistance. My legs didn’t give out after standing on hard concrete longer than expected. All huge wins!
I hope I brought a little bit of motivation to you on this Monday. Have a great week, Queens!
