Welcome to /SEO
If you're looking to obsess about ranking better in Google, LLMs, or the Local pack you're in the right place. We're pretty chill here, and there's only a few rules: 1. engage often: you get out what you put in 2. engage authentically: no posting AI slop, or spamming open ended questions (what do you guys think about X) 3. don't spam the community with your offer/service/product 4. stay on topic 5. don't be an asshole That's it! Unofficial rule #6: post a quick reply to this and intro yourself - who you are - where you're based - what you're up to
Predictions about content, domains, branding GEO, and AI
Posted this elsewhere--what do y'all think? What am I missing (or what am I wrong about )? 1. the future of content is generated by and for LLMs with increasingly stale (or hallucinated, YOLO) info. 2. the valuable info and the value of the interconnected web will be realized in private communities and curated mediums like (human written) newsletters. 3. short, one-or-two-word mostly .com domains have historically been valuable, and AI's inherits this bias when they answer/recommend. 4. high value .coms will be a positive signal like human-written content and fresh, original data--basically the same with ultra premium .org and .ai domain names. 5. if my Claude can produce the same insight and quality as what you wrote in your content, your content is valueless. You gotta at least put some shine on that shit. 6. people fucking hate how LLMs write to them, you think people want to read your comment/linkedin post/newsletter/short form video script that sounds like that too? 7. winning creators will be verifiably real humans, with a recognizable style, and have authentic things to say. 8. avatars and AI characters will have their niche place but people will, for a long time to come IMO, not trust them, and gravitate towards actual humans. 9. when content is cheap to make and effortless to publish, distribution is actually king, not content. 10. I've said it before: the big move is to acquire REAL assets built by REAL people (before this becomes the OBVIOUS move and sellers realize the value) and then use those assets to drive the narrative about your brand.
An Introduction to AEO/GEO
Profound put together a pretty solid GEO 101 guide on trying to rank your brand with the LLMs. I went through some of it and it gets real granular with things like how to build the prompts that show how a brand is doing, defining who and what your brand is and does for the AIs, auditing your site for AEO, and lots more. Of course they're trying to sell you on Profound, that's the name of the game, but this is a pretty solid resource if you're just starting to get into AI SEO.
Do Not Build Links Like This
Saw this post from Outrank this morning, talking like they are just discovering public link marketplaces for the first time... Just in case you're a total beginner: do not do this. I don't want to say "if it seems that easy it's probably going to go terribly wrong" because parasite SEO exists and it IS that easy, you just have to know you're playing a short term game instead of building a hundred shitty public links to your real, valuable business... src: https://x.com/tibo_maker/status/2094357239758725173
Do Not Build Links Like This
This is not how EMDs or 301 work
Do not follow this advice... it is cringe and wrong: -- I told one of my clients to buy an exact match domain three years ago. The domain was his service plus his city dot com. He paid 12 dollars for it. Pointed it at his main website. Within six months that domain was ranking on page one for his primary keyword. Three years later he still ranks there. That 12 dollar domain has generated hundreds of thousands in revenue and he has never run a single ad against it. Exact match domains still work for local SEO. Google gives them a relevance signal because the keyword is literally IN the URL. They also help your Google Business Profile rank higher in Maps when the domain is connected to your listing. Most of them are sitting on GoDaddy for 10 to 15 dollars. Go check RIGHT NOW if yours is available. src: https://x.com/irentdumpsters/status/2092975426364637241 -- Do not do this lol.
