Audience Development
My new show opens in a couple of weeks and I'm doing a couple of things to try and grow any potential audience I can.
My ask for help is that I would love to hear what you do to develop an audience for your work.
WHAT I AM DOING
I'm sending some emails out to local dance and drama schools with a discount code that they can offer their customers as a sense of trying to build reciprocity.
Basically letting them say that they've negotiated a discount for the show so it makes their customers feel good about their business.
Now obviously brings a benefit to us (ticket sales) if anybody does send it on but to be honest I have found that most small business owners think small-mindedly in the sense of trying to protect their own turf.
It feels like people are less receptive to promoting other shows or offering discounts to other shows to their audience because they're scared it's going to strip their audience away and eat into their little part of the pie. What they don't see is that actually that the pie is huge enough for all of us.
My philosophy is that if I can do something that makes my audience feel like I'm working for them, then that's still me serving my audience even if it's not my show.
Maybe it's just me. Would love to hear your thoughts.
