🌱 Tidbit Tuesday β€” Let's Talk Sprouting
Okay so I have mason jars sitting on my counter right now with beans literally coming to LIFE in them. πŸ˜‚ Have you ever sprouted anything before? Drop a yes or no below because today we are getting into it! πŸ‘‡
🌱 So what even IS sprouting?
You take a dried bean or seed. You soak it in water. And then over the next few days it literally starts to grow a little tail and become a living thing. That's it. That's sprouting. And it sounds simple but what actually happens to that little bean nutritionally while it's sprouting??? Kind of insane.
When a seed starts to sprout it basically wakes up. Enzymes activate. Nutrients multiply. Things that were blocking your body from absorbing the good stuff start to break down. You are taking something dormant and turning it into something ALIVE. On your kitchen counter. In a mason jar. For free. πŸ˜‚πŸŒΏ
Sprouting literally upgrades your food.
🌿 Protein increases by around 20%
🌿 Vitamins can increase by up to 500%
🌿 Way easier to digest β€” your gut will thank you
🌿 Minerals like zinc, iron and magnesium become more absorbable
🌿 Fewer calories than the un-sprouted version
FIVE HUNDRED PERCENT more vitamins. From a jar on your counter. Just let that to sink in for a second. 🀯
How do you do it? I use the mason jar method:
1️⃣ Rinse your beans or seeds really well
2️⃣ Put them in a wide mouth mason jar and cover with water
3️⃣ Stretch some cheesecloth over the top and secure with a rubber band or buy sprouting lids
4️⃣ Let them soak overnight β€” about 8 to 12 hours
5️⃣ Drain and rinse through the cloth or lid
6️⃣ Tip the jar on its side at an angle so any extra water drains out
7️⃣ Rinse and drain every 8 to 12 hours
8️⃣ Keep them somewhere dim and cool β€” not in direct sunlight
9️⃣ Watch little tails start to appear and feel very accomplished πŸ˜„πŸŒ± Second and third pic below are the little tails my chickpeas and soybeans started today!!
⏱️ How long does each one take?
🌿 Alfalfa β€” 4 to 6 days. Tiny, delicate, mild, CRUNCHY, and perfect on salads and sandwiches. Classic for a reason. Pictured below. My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!!
🫘 Moong dal / Mung beans β€” the FASTEST one. You'll see action in literally one day and they're ready to eat in 3 to 4 days. Rinse daily and throw them raw into salads and bowls. So good. Also pictured below.
🫘 Chickpeas β€” rinse and drain every 8 to 12 hours for about 2-4 days until you see little tails about a quarter inch long. Eat them raw in salads or blend them into hummus for extra nutrition. πŸ™Œ
🫘 Adzuki beans β€” these tiny little shiny red beans from East Asia take about 3 to 5 days. Once sprouted they are incredible raw in salads and bowls. So underrated. Not pictured but THESE ARE GOOD!!
πŸ₯— Wait β€” you can eat sprouted beans RAW?
Yes!! And this is the thing most people don't know. Once small beans are sprouted they are actually easy to digest β€” almost like eating a vegetable. No cooking required. Just rinse them and throw them straight into your salad, your bowl, your wrap, or even your smoothie. 🌱
One thing to note! Not every bean is safe to eat raw even when sprouted. Kidney beans, broad beans and lima beans contain toxins that only get destroyed through cooking β€” so never eat those raw even if sprouted. Stick to mung beans, lentils, chickpeas, adzuki and alfalfa for raw eating and you are totally good. 🌿
I currently have matpe beans, chickpeas, AND soybeans sprouting on my counter and every time I walk past them I get a little too excited about it. πŸ˜‚ Their little tails started growing todag!
Have you ever sprouted anything? What do you want to try first? Don'tforget to drop it below! πŸ‘‡
