Functional Labs - When you need it and WHY
Hi Guys,
Many of you have shown interest in functional labs and testing. Organic Acid Testing is the one I prioritize above all the other tests. However, some of you are further along your journey, and some of you are right at the beginning. I like to refer to these as Top 5 Tests.
If you are interested in testing or retesting any of the labs below, just comment down here, and me or my team will reach out to you personally to assist.
Organic Acid Test:
A simple urine collection, this is one I use as a starting point to begin constructing a roadmap. You get clear indication into your child's detoxification pathways, candida load, clostridia markers, oxalic acid, neurotransmitter status, B vitamins for methylation, glutathione status, fungal metabolites, and even detailed snapshot on your child mitochondrial function which is what is linked to low muscle tone, delay in gross/fine motor skills as well as Apraxia.
Comprehensive Stool Analysis:
This is a 3 day stool sample collection and gives detailed markers for gut, bacteria (like staph, strep infections) as well as parasitology. This helps plan what type of detox can be planned esp if parasites are a problem.
Hair Metals & Minerals Analysis:
A hair strand test, this analyzes what heavy metals your child may be carrying a burden of. This helps us evaluate what is hindering child's cognition, language at the root cause level as heavy metals like lead and mercury (amongst others) are very toxic and will create inflammation which continues to act as a barrier to your child's progress. This test also gives a really good snapshot at your childs essential minerals such as zinc, manganese, selenium (essential for methylation) and even lithium (helps with B Vitamin transport).
Mycotoxin Test:
This is a urine based test that is specifically testing for mold burden in your child. Mold toxicity turns up as histamine sensitivity, allergies, immune dysregulation, regression and more. So I use OATs to identify patterns that may point to mold burden and run a mycotox test next to confirm the mold exposure. I have been helping families identify mold in their environment as well and plug the ongoing exposure to this neurotoxin.
Food Sensitivities Test;
I prefer this Dry Blood Spot test on some of the other tests available out there. Blood spotting is what makes the test results accurate. Food sensitivities are different to allergies. Children that continue to show GI issues on a Gluten Free, Dairy Free Diet may require a deeper evaluation of what foods they may reacting negatively too. When I have ran this test, I have found surprising results like inflammatory response to coconut (therefore making coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut water - not a good choice for those kiddos) or fish (therefore making fish oils not a good choice ! Imagine that, usually Omega3's are part of most protocols) So this test is where we start to go granular with our findings.
Methylation Gene Panel:
I add this in the end, but it is one of the most important test as well. This test will test for all the methylation genes, helping families understand their child's MTHFR status and helping me as a practitioner make adjustments to their diet, supplements accordingly. If you are in US or UK, you can also run a Maxgen test that gives even more insights on other pathways like histamine, glutathione, neurotransmitters etc.
Method to Order:
If you are in USA you can simply head over to my website on www.myhealthjunction.com and place an order for any of the top 5 tests from there. If you are outside of USA, comment below and my team will reach out to assist !
