It's a small world... Glad to be a part of it!
I have been around music for my whole life, musical family and all that. So, naturally, I have picked up an instrument or two over the years.
First it was the drums, and there were hundreds of different drumming related YouTube channels that helped me out over the years, and thousands more left for me to discover.
Then it was the same with guitar, bass, sax...
But only recently I noticed how I had been neglecting my favourite instrument, taking it for granted! And that is of course SINGING! Sure, I guess I have always been able to kinda sing, you know, staying on pitch, picking up melodies. But I have never practiced it, even though I have always thought it to be the most beautiful instrument there is! I just never thought of myself as a singer!
Well backstory is over, and this brings us to around four months ago. I get on YouTube once more, with the intent of learning cool stuff about singing, expecting it to be just like with all other instruments. But... Something is different!
This time there are only a few channels around?!?! And especially with more niche stuff, such as subharmonic techniques, there are just a couple channels?
Subharmonic techniques are a good example of my confusion. I expect there to be hundreds, if not thousands, of guys telling me how to sing lower, step by step. Instead, there are so few singers in the subharmonic scene, that they all pretty much get named in each video on the subject.
And it's the same everywhere you go in YouTube singing! Rock singing has a few more channels, but I mean, everyone just watches Chris Liepe, right?
At first when I realized how surprisingly small the world of singing is online, I was actually a little relieved. The sheer amount of, lets say, guitar content is overwhelming. But I guess this is about the natural differences between learning and teaching singing, compared to other musical skills. With for example guitar playing:
1) You can just show the student where to put their fingers
2) The same stuff works pretty much every time
Okay, that's wildly oversimplified, but you get the point. Sorry guitarrists😅
With singing:
1) Explaining and understanding what you have to do is HARD
2) The same stuff RARELY works every time, with every singer
For example mixed voice, belting, support, fry distortion and other things have been explained to me with countless different sensations and feelings (i've got most of it now though, thank you!!!) Where as a thousand guitar teachers will have in total maybe three variations in how they teach a technique on guitar.
But this has led me to a realization, that singing is much more dependant on finding stuff yourself than any other instrument. Hand holding won't work endlessly here, I just have to get in a room where no-one can hear me and LET LOOSE!!! Without damaging my voice of cource (ugh, another thing to worry about)
But to wrap this up: The online world of singing is small, because it's a difficult world to live in! And I have a huge appriciation for everyone who creates singing related content online, even if their tutorial didn't exactly make something click for me. It might have helped someone else.
But yeah, with other instruments you LEARN a new technique, but with singing you DISCOVER it! And so while with other instruments you TEACH a new technique, with singing you just try your best to help on the way of DISCOVERY. And THAT IS my reason for the surprisingly small amount of singing teachers on YouTube. Cause this time I HAVE TO PUT IN THE WORK and DISCOVER MY VOICE!!! And im glad to be doing it with all of you!!!
