Reiki comes from the Japanese language, where "Rei" means God or the universe, and "Ki" means energy. Thus, it is interpreted as universal life force energy. Reiki is a healing system and a spiritual practice, also known as a healing system by laying on of hands or touch. Reiki is one of the many healing techniques that utilize energy, and it is not a religion or a part of any religion. The Reiki healing technique is an original technique from Master Usui and there is nothing like it anywhere else, as stated in the manual given to his students, even though some consider Reiki to have originated in Tibet and to have been rediscovered by Master Usui.
Advantages of Reiki
Reiki has several advantages compared to other healing techniques, including:
- It is easy to learn and requires minimal knowledge.
- It is easy to practice and does not require exhausting physical exercise.
- Its vibrations are smoother and more effective for healing.
- It flows towards the problem or disease.
- It will not run out and flows according to need.
- It heals physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual problems.
- It is easily acquired, only requiring an attunement of about 20 minutes.
- It can be used for protection and materialization.
- The ability is permanent with no restrictions, as long as Reiki is not used for negative purposes.
- Healing can be done from a distance and programmed.
- The patient's negative energy is not transmitted to the healer.
- The healer's energy is not depleted.
- It can be performed in group healing.

The Five Life Principles of Reiki
Life principles are the heart or core of Reiki. They originated from a poem by Emperor Meiji which was adapted by Master Usui into Reiki. It is best to recite them in the morning and evening, with hands in the gassho position in front of the chest (both palms placed together).
Just for today:
- Do not anger.
- Do not worry.
- Be grateful for all blessings.
- Work diligently.
- Be kind to all living beings.
This is useful for transforming the mind, making it more focused, calm, patient, not easily angered, and able to maintain self-control.
Ethics in Reiki
- Do not promise a cure.
- Obtain permission to channel Reiki, whether directly or from a distance.
- Do not take advantage of circumstances or situations.
- Provide a brief explanation about Reiki.
- Do not make a diagnosis if you do not fully understand the diagnosis.
- Maintain the confidentiality of patient information.
Attunement
This is the process of opening the pathways and chakras, as well as adjusting the student's vibration to the Reiki energy. So that after the attunement, one can easily access Reiki energy with just intention. In the past, this attunement was called empowerment (reiju) and was performed without symbols. For this attunement, many make special preparations, such as burning incense, adjusting lighting, playing soft music, lighting candles, and others. But in my opinion, the best approach is simplicity; even without doing the things above, the attunement can still proceed well. The time required is around 20 to 30 minutes; usually, a master level attunement takes longer than other levels. Attunements are usually done three times for three levels, but re-attunements can also be done for each level.
Levels in Reiki
Originally, Reiki consists of three levels: level I, level II where the student gains the right to the symbols, and level III or the master level. Now, some have expanded it to four levels by adding level IIIa or the personal master level. In level IIIa, the student receives the master attunement but is not given the right to teach or the knowledge to give attunements. Currently, there are even Reiki traditions, especially non-traditional ones, that have more than three levels, ranging from four to six levels. For example, Lightarian Reiki has six levels.
Time Required Between Levels
There are many opinions on this matter; some say the time between levels depends on the student's readiness (financial, mental). There are also those who state that one must wait for a minimum of three months to progress from level I to level II. Some teach Reiki levels I and II simultaneously or teach directly up to the Master level, perhaps with the thought that Master Usui also reached the master level directly. In my opinion, nothing is wrong with any of these approaches; whether waiting a long time or immediately achieving the master level, that might be what is best for that person.
Channeling Reiki
What is needed to channel Reiki is the initial intention to channel; once you place your hands on the targeted area, relax and surrender, do not make any effort or attempt to heal. Just enjoy the sensations felt and, if possible, enter a meditative state. It is best not to speak while channeling Reiki; if there is anything to ask the patient, it can be asked before or after the healing session.
Hand Positions
Master Usui has 5 hand positions, namely the forehead, sides of the head, upper back of the head, lower back of the head (near the neck), and the top of the head, followed by scanning. Dr. Hayashi has 7 hand positions, but uses 12 hand positions in group healing. These are the positions taught by Mrs. Takata in the West. I prefer the 7 hand positions (traditional Japanese Reiki), namely the forehead, cheeks, back of the head, upper corners of the chest, front waist, upper back, and lower back.
Personal Healing (Self Healing)
For personal healing, the method is the same as healing a patient; for affirmations, simply change the word "patient" to "myself", and there is no need to open and close the aura.
Certificates
Certificates are usually given if you study Reiki formally in a Reiki organization. For a piece of certificate, you have to pay a fairly expensive price. The rates for Reiki level I are around 100 to 250 thousand rupiah, for level II around 350 to 400 thousand rupiah, for level IIIa around 500 to 600 thousand rupiah, and for the master level around 2.5 million rupiah. Mrs. Takata herself taught master level Reiki for a fee of 10 thousand US dollars. A certificate is needed if you are going to teach Reiki formally; teaching formally tends to lean more towards the business side. Fortunately, today there are many Reiki Masters who teach Reiki at cheap prices, or even for free.
Reiki Lineage
Lineage shows the line of teaching possessed by a practitioner. For example, the common one starts from Mikao Usui, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata, and then to the 22 students of Mrs. Takata and so forth. There are also lineages that do not originate from Mrs. Hawayo Takata, such as Reiki practitioners in Japan, or those originating from other students of Dr. Hayashi.
Commonly Heard and Encountered Statements
- My tradition is better than yours.
- You learned from an incorrect Reiki Master.
- Your Reiki is not good because you got it for free.
- My Reiki has a higher vibration.
- My lineage is shorter.
- You learned too fast so it is less solid.
These words are often heard, in various media, both directly and indirectly. If you encounter the things above, the best thing to do is to return to the five life principles of Reiki, which are: be kind to all living beings.
