The Gokai, or Five Precepts, are at the heart of the Reiki system. They are not separate from the practice of Reiki, nor are they simply a set of ethical principles added to the system. They are essentially the whole practice of Reiki. The Gokai bring practice into the circumstances of everyday life. They meet us in the places where we are most likely to lose our center, in our reactions, fears, attachments, relationships, work, and the stories we create about ourselves and the world around us. The Gokai are so deceptively simple, the words are easy to remember; embodying and living them is where the work of practice happens. The Precepts do not ask us to become someone different, nor are they a script for creating a perfected version of ourselves. But by keeping them present in our minds and daily lives, they bring our attention back to what is happening within us. When anger arises, we have an opportunity to see it. When worry takes hold, we can recognize it. When we lose connection with gratitude, diligence, or kindness, we can notice that movement and return. Working with them is not about avoiding or never experiencing anger, worry, frustration, resistance, or disconnection. It is about becoming conscious enough to recognize what is happening without needing to reject, suppress, or judge what we find. We learn to notice what has arisen without becoming attached to it, and to choose to return to our inner balance and peace. Because Reiki is not ultimately about fixing what is wrong with us working with the Gokai helps us return to center, to awareness, and to the part of ourselves that has not been lost beneath the layers of conditioning and experience. 招福の秘法 Shōfuku no hihō The secret method of inviting happiness 萬病の霊薬 Manbyō no reiyaku The miraculous medicine for all diseases of body and mind 今日だけは Kyō dake wa Just for today 怒るな Ikaru na Do not be angry 心配すな Shinpai suna Do not worry 感謝して Kansha shite Be grateful 業をはげめ Gyō o hageme Be diligent in your work
