After CrossFit today, I spent about 45 minutes talking with one of our coaches about fitness, longevity, meditation, and Reiki. He asked an interesting question: “How can I bring Reiki into the gym?” We discussed how athletes sometimes struggle through demanding workouts like today’s thrusters, burpees over the bar, and assault bike. My response? It starts with intention—before you even arrive at the gym. As an athlete: Before leaving home, review the workout and establish your intention. Are you aiming to complete the entire metabolic conditioning workout within the time cap, or is there a particular skill you want to improve? Consider the weights, repetitions, and movements. During warm-up, assess how your body responds and adjust accordingly. Most importantly, stay in your own lane. Your workout isn’t about matching someone else’s speed, strength, or endurance. It’s about honoring the intention you established for yourself. As a coach: Intention begins before the athletes arrive, too. Review who’s attending. Are they beginners, intermediate, or advanced athletes? Does the space accommodate everyone starting together, or would staggered movements or separate heats create a better experience? Coaching with intention means understanding who’s in front of you, not simply delivering the workout on the board. The connection to Reiki? Awareness. Intention. Presence. These are principles we can bring into movement, training, recovery, and everyday life. What would change in your daily activities if you established your intention before beginning?
