We live in a world that is terrified of pain. From the moment we are born we are conditioned to believe that happiness is the default state of humanity and anything else is a malfunction. If you feel sad you assume something has gone wrong. If you feel anxious you look for a pill to make it stop. We have pathologized the human experience to such a degree that we no longer view suffering as a teacher but as an enemy to be defeated. But what if we have got it all backwards? What if the darkness you are feeling right now is not a sign that you are broken but proof that you are about to be fixed? The great Sufi poet Rumi once wrote that "The wound is the place where the Light enters you"
It is a beautiful sentiment but it is also a profound spiritual truth that we have largely forgotten in our rush to medicate away our discomfort.
