Food, Glorious Food!
Got to admit - when it comes to food, I'm a big fan.
Over the years, I've known a lot of people and found that cooking is not a universal skill, though I believe that it should be. I grew up assuming that all women cooked. Yes, today that's a very sexist assumption, but that's what all of our media showed us. Women often stayed at home, raising the children, taking care of the home, and that included cooking and preparing the meals.
In my house growing up, everyone learned to cook. My mother is an excellent cook and she taught us. My sister and I loved to bake, so we frequently made cookies, cakes, and other treats. My older brother loved to cook so much that at the age of 11 (might have been 9!) he was cooking London Broil and Yorkshire Pudding for our Sunday dinners. He's a trained chef now and we look forward to every visit and the amazing meals that are sure to be served. I remember my younger brother taking care of his own food and snacks from an early age, and growing up to be able to cook for himself, his friends, and his family.
These experiences led me to believe that everyone, including children, should learn to cook at least three things - at age appropriate stages, of course. They should be able to prepare...
  1. A simple breakfast or snack. Examples: For breakfast - a bowl of cereal with milk, a toasted bagel, scrambled eggs. When they come home from school: hot dogs, mac n cheese, veggies & hummus or guacamole, etc.
  2. A fancier meal to impress a date. Examples: Spaghetti, Lasagna, Shrimp Scampi, Curry, Risotto, Grilled Salmon, Roasted Chicken.
  3. A meal to feed a party of friends (without ordering out). Examples: Homemade pizza, Burgers on the grill, Tacos, Spaghetti, Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Chili or Stew.
Pick one or two things and practice them until you do them well. Whatever you choose, you will always have a go-to in any situation, regardless of whether or not you become the person who cooks the most for your family.
Let's hear from you - Do you cook? If so, at what age did you start? And what are your go-tos in each category?
