This one stopped me this morning. The Urology Care Foundation released their Men's Health Month campaign this week. One of the statistics: 77 per cent of men are unaware of their family history of urological issues. I don't know why I am surprised. I certainly did not know my fathers' urological history. Most men do not know. It is not something families talk about. But maybe we should. Most men have not been told. Not because the information does not exist somewhere in the family - it usually does. A grandfather who had surgery. A father who took pills for his prostate. An uncle who died of something nobody talked about. The information is there. It just never got passed down. Family history matters for prostate cancer. A lot. If a father or brother had it, the risk more than doubles. If anyone in this community knows their family history - or helped someone find out theirs - I would love to hear how that conversation went. And if you are not sure about your own family history, this is your nudge to ask.
