I want to share a number with you, because it is basically the whole reason this community exists.
A new study written in the Southern Medical Journal, from the Medical University of South Carolina, looked at men and prostate cancer screening. Did they talk to their doctor about their prostate, and did they go and get tested. The link is in the comments.
The finding were: only about 6 in 100 had the conversation.
Of the men who had the conversation, about 72 in 100 got tested. Of the men who did not have the conversation, about 36 in 100.
Just having the conversation roughly doubled the odds of getting tested. And it did not matter how old the man was, his race, his insurance, or his family history. The talk was the thing.
This is what we do here at Prostate Paladin. We are not doctors. We are not trying to replace your doctor, we just want you to talk about your prostate.
We are the people who start the conversation - with a husband, a father, a brother, a friend in an airport.
I do keep coming back to this point. Men need to get over themselves and just talk about the prostate. I know it is uncomfortable, it is not easy, but it is essential.
The actual conversation is the thing that moves men to act, not just with a doctor, it is everyday conversations - that is how word spreads.
If you have been sitting on a conversation with a man in your life, take this as your nudge. You do not need the perfect words. You just need to start.
Who is the man you need to talk to this week? Tell me in the comments.
Awareness is key.
