Book Bytes: 100 Tricks To Appear Smart in Meetings
I read - a LOT. got me a great book for my birthday so I figured I'd do a reflection from my reading period last night (because reflection is one of the key components of learning according to the book Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning)
The best have a strategy for the entire conversation designed to interact at important, high leverage moments with the goal of adding fuel so that OTHERS can keep the conversation going.
Here are a few key points:
  • Be intentional about the energy you have coming into your room as well as where you sit (the closer you are to the leader, the more valuable you are perceived to be
  • Always bring something to the room before the meeting starts to keep the energy high (snacks, water, jokes, stories are examples)
  • If the moment is right - use the whiteboard or draw a diagram or ask an open ended question
I have much more, but McKinsey taught me to talk in threes so I'm going to stop.
