Assignment #13: Painting with Shadows
Thank you all for the great submissions for the Close-Up Assignment! I really appreciated the details and textures you managed to find in the mundane—it was awesome to see how everyone changed their perspective! Now that we've focused on getting extremely close to our subjects over the last two weeks, it's time to shift our focus to something completely different and infinitely more dramatic. We are looking at the dark side. The Assignment: Painting with Shadow/Negative Space The Art of Seeing isn't always about what you illuminate—often, it's about what you choose to hide. "Chiaroscuro" is a classic art technique used by master painters like Caravaggio and Rembrandt to create deep contrast, mystery, and intense mood. Your task is to create a captivating image where at least 70% of the frame consists of absolute shadow or darkness. Examples of chiaroscuro images: - A single motivated light source - Careful control of edge transitions - An emotionally charged subject (Important Note: You do NOT need expensive lighting gear for this. I already see you making some new purchasing excuses @Wittawat Sadindum & @Endri Dano :D)! You can use natural light from a cracked door, light breaking through window blinds, a single street lamp at night, or a simple desk lamp in a dark room. The goal is to be highly intentional with your contrast and composition. Visual Ideas: -Isolation >Figure swallowed by black -Memory >Only fragment visible -Fear >Unknown space dominates -Faith >Candlelight in darkness -Identity >Partial portrait -Mortality >Still life with decay (thank you @Aa B for the notes!) The Goal: To train your eye to control high-contrast scenes and to understand how letting the shadows tell the story can completely change the emotional weight of an image. 📝 How to participate: 1. Go out and shoot/edit your shadow image. 2. Create a New Post inside the "Assignments" category. 3. Title Format: Please use Assignment #13: [Your Title] 4. Number of pictures: 1 photo 5. Details: Include a short "Gallery Statement" – tell us briefly about your intent, the emotion, or the "Why" behind the image.

Can't decide what to submit for assignment 13
Hello everyone, I'm looking for advice, feedback on 3 photos I've selected for this assignment Please note that I'm a begginer photographer, I still do this on my free time and started almost 2 years ago As for the "Artistic" view, I tend to say that I don't especially shoot with "Intention" but I rather try to see beautiful things in my surrounding and capture it, I don't feel like I'm "Creating scenes" but I try to see them where people usually pass by. I think other photos in my *under construction* portfolio could still match the assignment. (Please be kind it misses my most recent shots but I'm having difficulties feeing up time to extract and edit hundreds of shots 😅) Please feel free to give me feedback if you feel like it https://julien.plasteig.fr/portfolio Thank you for any feedback you can give me ❤️

365 days with my Tree
I have set myself a year long assignment. For two reasons, to develop a habit that is easy for me to implement: to take a photo a day. Second, to learn. I will go out at times and take other photos, but this is really just for my self learning. The Weeping Cherry is in my front yard and is an achievable goal. I'm also making detailed notes in a file on each photo and its settings. I won't post everyday, as that will be very boring, but wanted some feedback and opinions. Here's this morning's 2 images. On Auto as that is the baseline that I will begin from. It was interesting that even though these two images were only seconds apart, there is a difference in Aperture and ISO. Terrible photo I know, but we all start somewhere. I will keep reading..... 1. Mode - Auto, Shutter Speed - 1/125, Aperture - F5.6, ISO - 140, Focal Length - 29mm, Exposure Comp/Metering - 0.0, Colour Space - sRGB, ImageSize 3872 x 2592 1.
