Alright, fam, let’s talk REAL ID, because this is not the kind of deadline you wanna sleep on. Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant license or other approved identification to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings. No REAL ID? No boarding pass. Period.
But before we get into what to carry, here’s the why...
🛡️ What’s the REAL ID Act All About?
The REAL ID Act was signed into law in 2005 as part of a post-9/11 effort to boost national security. It set federal standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards to prevent terrorism and identity fraud.
🕵🏽♀️ The 9/11 Commission found that some of the hijackers used fraudulent or weak IDs to carry out their plans. So the government said, “Let’s fix that,” and added layers of security like:
- Facial image capture
- Verification of personal info
- Enhanced digital features to prevent forgery
Basically, your ID got smarter to keep us all safer.
✅ Acceptable IDs Starting May 7, 2025:
- REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID (look for the ⭐️)
- U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- U.S. Military ID
- DHS Trusted Traveler card (e.g., Global Entry)
- Enhanced Driver’s License (from certain states)
- Foreign Passport
- Tribal-issued ID
- Border Crossing Card
- HSPD-12 PIV Card (federal employee ID)
Let’s keep you ready, steady, and always cleared for takeoff 💛✌🏽🛫
