Let's be honest. Golf is not real life. For a long time, I fought that... But now that I have accepted the idea that it ISN'T everything, now it can be what it is.
A beautiful thing, that just so happens to take over 4 hours to play, plus countless hours of practice and preparation to be any good. Oh and plenty of $.
But that is what it is.
It's something that can be all consuming, and often is. And it can be a way to simply engage our minds and bodies and be in companionship.
Scores don't mean anything. Unless you make them mean something.
What is real life, then? Providing something to the world, not in an abstract way but to real people. Addressing what matters to them. In other words, sacrificing oneself and ones own selfish desires in order to actually step up and be more to other people than you are to yourself.
That's my take, at least.
Both golf, and real life, is a type of game, wherein the one who is most righteous doesn't always win, but one must couple righteousness and diligence with humility, long time horizons, a short term memory of misfortune, and appreciation for the blessings they receive. And a sense of wonder doesn't hurt either.
