Weekly Discussion #37 - Do children preceive the paranormal differently?
Do children experience paranormal phenomena more often because of perception differences or lack of skepticism? Are children seeing things adults have learned to filter out? That is the question for this week. Think back to when you were a kid. Did you have an imaginary friend? Did you just make that person up, or did you believe they were 100% real? Why are reports of imaginary friends, spirits, and unusual encounters so common in young children? Do children have a stronger connection to the spiritual world because they are newer to physical existence? Or could children possess intuitive abilities that diminish with age? Maybe children are more likely to communicate with entities because they have less fear and fewer preconceived ideas. If children truly perceive more, why do many lose those abilities as they get older? Has modern skepticism weakened paranormal sensitivity? If you had an imaginary friend as a kid, did you believe they were real, or did you just pretend they were there for the sake of having someone to "play" with?
Weekly Discussion #36 - Collective Consciousness & Thoughtforms
Can repeated belief create paranormal phenomena? Could heavily discussed haunted locations become stronger through collective attention? Is a haunting still “real” if it originates from collective consciousness instead of spirits? How about fear and storytelling? Can they feed entities over time? Collective consciousness and thoughtforms sit at the intersection of psychology, sociology, anthropology, religion, and paranormal studies. The term "𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀" was developed by Émile Durkheim in the late 19th century. Durkheim used it to describe the shared beliefs, values, symbols, and moral attitudes that unite a society. In this view, collective consciousness is not a psychic field or supernatural force. It is the invisible social glue that influences how groups think and behave. The collective consciousness could refer to shared cultural values, religious beliefs, or collective reactions to major events. Modern research shows that groups often develop shared memories, emotional responses, and emergent behaviors that cannot be predicted by studying individuals alone. In paranormal and spiritual communities, collective consciousness usually refers to the idea that minds are interconnected through some nonlocal field. A thoughtform is the idea that thoughts, emotions, and intentions can take on an energetic or quasi-independent existence. Some traditions teach that highly charged thoughtforms can eventually appear as visions, entities, or recurring experiences. 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝘆: 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗕𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀? Some researchers propose that certain hauntings may actually be collective thoughtforms rather than spirits. With this theory, it suggests that a location accumulates emotional energy, stories are repeated for decades, witnesses arrive expecting experiences and the expectation reinforces future experiences. Eventually, an "entity" appears to develop around the location. So what do you think? Could some hauntings or spirits be made up of the collective consciousness or thoughtforms? Maybe you have heard of an egregore. It is essentially a collective thoughtform. Rather than one person creating it, a group creates and sustains it.
Weekly Discussion #35 - Haunted Hotels
Hotels can be some of the most haunted places. They can be old, have a lot of history (both good and bad), and they can be abandoned or functional. It could be a proper hotel or a bed and breakfast. Here is an article from Country Living listing 24 Most Haunted Hotels in America. Have you been to any of these or any haunted hotels? If you have not stayed in a haunted hotel or bed and breakfast before, which one would it be and why? For those outside the USA, do you know of any haunted hotels in your area? Weekly Discussion #8 - Shadow People
Have you seen a shadow person? What do you think they are? If you have had multiple experiences, do you notice common triggers? (sleep paralysis, grief, rooms with certain lighting, meditation, substance use) Shadow people are typically described as dark, human-shaped silhouettes seen peripherally or against dim backgrounds. Encounters range from a fleeting sense of presence to detailed sightings (shape, movement, sometimes a feeling of dread). Reports occur across cultures and ages, and often spark intense debate: are they supernatural, neurological, or something else? There are various theories about what shadow people are and why people see them. Many sightings line up with sleep paralysis, hypnagogic (falling asleep) or hypnopompic (waking) hallucinations. During these states, the brain is partly awake and partly dreaming — vivid images, a sense of a presence, and paralysis can produce classic “shadow person” episodes. Psychological and perceptual explanations, such as Pareidolia, where the brain interprets vague shapes as meaningful forms (like faces or bodies). In low ligh,t our visual system fills gaps, sometimes producing humanoid silhouettes. Cultural stories and media shape what witnesses expect to see; once someone knows about shadow people, they may interpret ambiguous stimuli that way. Sometimes, there can be neurological causes. Abnormal activity in the temporal lobe or other brain regions can produce vivid hallucinations, feelings of presence, and out-of-body sensations. Migraines, seizures, extreme fatigue, or stimulants/sleep deprivation can trigger such episodes. Shadow figures also show up in folklore and religious traditions (dark visitors, trickster spirits, night hags). Some view them as archetypes from the collective unconscious — symbolic figures that appear across cultures with similar themes (fear, death, the unknown). A large portion of the paranormal community interprets shadow people as ghostly entities, residual energy, or conscious spirits. They can be visitors from parallel realities that briefly intersect with ours or malevolent presences that intentionally cause fear or harm. Even consciousness-based phenomena are shaped by collective emotions or individual psychic states.
