For anyone trying to get their foot in the door with CAL FIRE, Fire Fighter I is one of the primary entry points into the department. FFIs work on fire crews performing wildland, rural and structural fire suppression, along with station, equipment and other operational duties.

Your application package can include:
✅ STD 678 State Application
✅ Resume
✅ Authorization to Release Information — PO-299
✅ Work Location Form
✅ Required training/certification documents
CAL FIRE uses the Work Location Form to determine which Units/locations you’re willing to accept employment in, so choose locations you would actually be willing to work.
🎓 GET YOUR CERTS TOGETHER
Depending on your qualifications and assignment, CAL FIRE recognizes training such as CAL FIRE Fire Fighter Academy/Basic training, California SFT-accredited Fire Fighter I academy or Fire Fighter I certification, along with required EMS, FEMA and wildland training documentation.
Don’t assume you’re out just because you’re missing something. CAL FIRE guidance has encouraged candidates to apply even when they don’t yet possess every listed document and to submit qualifying certifications as they obtain them.
