SIDECHAINING IS REAL !!! 👂👂
Let me explain 🤓
One of the complaints I often hear about using sidechain compression style techniques is that "it's unnatural"... or words to that effect (as if that even matters, but okay...). 🙄
But I've long said that, in reality, our hearing system is quirky, and *does do* something akin to a sidechain compression effect under certain circumstances... 🗜
For example, when someone speaks to you in a noisy environment, the ambient noise *can* seem to lower in volume as compared to the voice you're focused on. There's no doubt a psychological element to this (what we focus on inevitably affects our perception), BUT I've always suspected a physiological element to it... 🧠
ANYWAY, today I've experienced the perfect example. I'm working on a mixdown of a track with a big sub bass playing a sort of stabby off-beat pattern... 👍
But it's hot in here. I switched on the air con and the machine got quite loud for a moment... 🤔
When I solo'd the off-beat sub bass in my earphones, I noticed the sound of the air conditioner pumping rhythmically in time with the music. I'd never noticed that effect so clearly before. 🤯
It's REALLY stark, like someone put ShaperBox on the AC, triggered by the sub. 😏
I KNEW it. So sidechain compression-style effects DO mimic natural psychoacoustic phenomena. 😎
