Why your weekly check-in matters?
Your weekly check-in is one of the most important tools we've got, and I don't want you to skip past it. Think of it like this: your workouts and nutrition are the plan, but your check-in is how we know if the plan is actually working. Numbers like weight, blood pressure, and compliance tell us the "what," but your notes on challenges and how the program feels tell us the "why." That's huge, because two people can have the exact same program and get totally different results depending on what's going on in their life that week. On top of that, your SHREDS answers (sleep, hunger, recovery, energy, digestion, and stress) give us the full picture behind the scenes. You can be doing everything "right" in the gym and kitchen, but if you're not sleeping, your stress is through the roof, or your energy is tanking, that's going to show up in your results eventually. The more honest and detailed you are here, the faster I can catch small issues before they become big ones, and the better I can adjust your plan to fit your actual life, not just a cookie-cutter version of it. This isn't busywork. It's how we stay dialed in together, week after week. RECAP of SHREDS: The SHREDS Check-In: Why Your Gut Feeling Matters We track a lot of numbers around here — protein, calories, reps, sets. But some of the most important data points you have don't come from a scale or a tracker. They come from you. That's what SHREDS is: Sleep, Hunger, Recovery, Energy, Digestion, Stress. Six things only you can measure, because only you are living inside your body every day. No app can tell you if you woke up feeling ready to take on the world or if you're running on fumes. You can. Here's how to think through each one, comparing this week to last (on 1-5 scale): SLEEP — Are you getting 6-8 hours, consistently? Sleeping through the night, or tossing and turning, staring at the ceiling? Great sleep = 5. HUNGER — Is it manageable, or are you swinging between not hungry at all and full-on binging? Balanced hunger cues = 3. Barely hungry = 1. Raging hunger = 5.

🧂 Sea Salt or Pink Himalayan Salt? The Answer Is Neither
Real talk: you’ve probably paid extra for a “healthier” salt at some point. Pink Himalayan, fancy sea salt, the stuff with the pretty crystals. Let’s look at what the actual research says. 🔬 WHAT THE STUDY FOUND Researchers ran 31 samples of pink salt through a mass spectrometer (a machine that measures exactly what minerals are in something) and compared them to iodized table salt. Here’s the deal: • Sodium is basically the same across all of them. Table, sea, pink — doesn’t matter. Salt is salt. • The “trace minerals” are real, but tiny. To get a meaningful amount of them, you’d need to eat more than 30 grams of pink salt a day — that’s about 6 teaspoons. • 6 teaspoons of salt is dangerous. That’s roughly 6x the daily sodium limit health guidelines recommend. You’d wreck your blood pressure chasing minerals that don’t matter. • One sample even had lead levels above the legal safety limit. Sourcing salt for “natural minerals” also means sourcing whatever else is in that deposit. ⚠️ THE PART NOBODY TALKS ABOUT Here’s the twist: the one mineral in salt that actually matters — iodine — is usually missing from sea salt and pink salt. Iodine builds your thyroid hormone and is critical for a developing baby’s brain. Iodized table salt is one of the most reliable sources of it in a normal diet. So the “healthier” salts skip the one nutrient worth caring about, while charging you more for minerals your body will never get enough of to matter. 💡 KEY TAKEAWAY Don’t overthink your salt. Grab the cheap iodized table salt for your everyday cooking, and use fancy sea salt or pink salt for flavor and finishing if you like it — just don’t buy it thinking it’s a health upgrade. 🧠 DOES DIET SODA DAMAGE YOUR BRAIN?
Yesterday's breakdown on TV and brain aging kicked off a wave of new questions from you all. The big one: does diet soda actually fry your brain? Let's dig into where this claim is coming from — good news, there's no reason to panic. 🔬 WHERE THIS HEADLINE CAME FROM There's no human research showing sweeteners damage brain cells. The new coverage is based on a lab study on erythritol, a popular zero-calorie sweetener. Researchers took cells that line the tiny blood vessels in the brain, put them in a dish, and soaked them in erythritol — about the amount in one sweet drink (roughly 30 grams) — for 3 hours straight. Then they checked how the cells behaved. The treated cells made less of the molecule that keeps blood vessels relaxed and open, more of the one that tightens them, and were slower to release the body's natural clot-buster when challenged. On paper, that's not a change you want to see in a blood vessel. ⚠️ WHY THIS DOESN'T MEAN WHAT THE HEADLINES SAY - Cells in a dish, not a person: nobody drank anything. No mouth, no gut, no bloodstream — none of the processing your body actually does with what you eat or drink. - One massive dose, all at once: those cells sat soaked in erythritol for 3 hours straight, roughly 150 times what even the heaviest real-world sweetener users take in over a full day. - No real outcome measured: it's hard to say a sweetener raises stroke risk when nobody had a stroke — there was nobody to have one. This study measured cell chemistry, not a single real health outcome in a single real person. 📊 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LOOK AT REAL PEOPLE The fear shrinks fast. One widely-cited "triple the dementia risk" study came from an analysis of fewer than 100 cases of stroke and dementia. Once researchers accounted for diabetes and blood pressure, that risk was mostly explained by those two factors — not the sweetener itself. If you're serious about protecting your brain, The Lancet Commission has identified 14 factors that actually move the needle on dementia risk: things like blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, hearing, movement, and smoking. Diet soda isn't on that list — because the evidence just isn't there.
