Ok, so that title makes sense with a little bit of back story. Years ago I caught the bug for endurance races and training was my happy place. Marathons, triathlons, paddling Outrigger canoes across the Ka iwi, I loved it! But that momentum came to a halt when I crashed my racing bike while out on a training ride. My helmet broke into 2 pieces and saved my life, but my back was by far in worse condition.
I had a long recovery from a traumatic head injury, a fractured spine, and so much road rash... it was not pretty. After back surgery I had permanent nerve damage that resulted in weakness and numbness down the right side of my right knee, leg, and foot. It was a win to me considering.
So fast forward 8 years, and like anything, I learned to live with chronic back pain, wobbly balance, and right leg and foot numbness where I had to be mindful of injuries that I could not feel. But aging was starting to feel like an uphill battle. That's when I found Egan's Fitness. And through Egan's I found Hawaii Optimum Performance, which is where I had my 1st experience with PEMF, like very strong medical grade PEMF. Chronic back pain vanished long enough where I was able to do strength training to improve my back health... win, win!
When my coach introduced the P90+ to the gym for members to try, it quickly became evident to me how beneficial it would be to get a daily dose of PEMF in the comfort of my home. I have the P90+, the Shaken Massager, and the Goggles... yup, all in!
The first 2 weeks of using the P90+ everyday happened to coincide just as my chronic back pain kicked in again. Good timing right, which nobody ever says about back pain. I spent the first week trying out the intensity Levels and figuring out what "uncomfortable" felt like to me... heated tightness in my ankles sprinkled with hot flashes and sweat, "Uncomfortable!!!" I settled on Level 10 if my pain is high, or sometimes Level 8 for workout recovery. A staff member at Egan's suggested I log each session and consistency using the P90+ is just bonus. Week 3 was a game changer. Back pain, muscle fatigue, and a shoulder strain all gone and 2 1/2 months later it hasn't returned, I feel so good!
But... cause there's always a "but,"... a few weeks ago I started feeling pain on the right side of my right knee and down my lower leg. My numb leg of 8 years! It happened while I was simply walking around during a workout. It felt like mild pain at first, then became intense, lasting for 20-30 seconds. It lingered at a low level for several hours and only increased if I did something strenuous like lunges or squats. A week later it was still happening intermittently so I made a Dr.s appointment and confided in my coach who said out loud what I was thinking... could it be a result from the P90+. Worst case scenario was I somehow injured it during training because it's numb, but there was no inflammation or trauma to my leg.
So my Dr. confirmed that there is definitely no injury to my leg, and that I have been experiencing nerve regeneration from my spinal cord injury down to my numb leg and it is presenting as pain. She said the pain receptors are activating in a positive way and that it should subside. I could actually feel her hand touch as she examined my knee and lower leg, but my foot still feels mostly numb.
My Dr. wanted to know eeeeverything that I had been doing from Egan's to nutrition and chiropractor treatments to PEMF. But what she said at the end of my appointment was what really sat with me... "after 8 years of numbness and chronic pain PEMF is about to change your life for the better."
