Today at the property we learned the reason behind a small hole underneath our windows (drains condensation, who would’ve thought??), and it reminded me of Chesterton’s Fence principle.
The principle is simple: before you remove something, understand why it was put there in the first place.
You can apply the same thinking to your goal. This matters most after a rough week, when scrapping the whole plan feels like the obvious fix.
Maybe you want to quit something, drop a commitment, or completely change your plan. Before you do, ask: What is this doing for me that I might be missing?
Then look at the trade-off. What will you gain by removing it, and what might you lose?
Sometimes removing the thing is exactly the right decision. You just want to understand what it was doing before you knock it down.
