A 24-year-old male was thrown from his dirt bike. He is lying on the ground, conscious, and yelling that his leg hurts. He has an obvious deformity to the mid-shaft femur. Skin is pale, cool, and sweaty. Radial pulses are weak and fast. Vital signs are BP 94/60, pulse 128, respirations 24.
What should you do first?
A. Apply a traction splint to the injured leg
B. Administer high-flow oxygen and treat for shock
C. Ask him to rate his pain on a scale of 1 to 10
D. Sit him up to make him more comfortable
