Have you ever heard of Alpha Gal Syndrome?
ALPHA GAL SYNDROME (AGS) **** RED MEAT ALLERGY **** As part of a discussion about Alpha-Gal syndrome we need to sort out fact from fiction. As Dr. Berry pointed out, people tend to panic before getting the facts. To that end I wanted to do a deep dive into AGS. Exactly what is it, what causes it, is it permanent, are there cures? Does everyone whoās bitten by a lonestar tick going to get AGS? If you test positive for the AGS antibodies does it mean you have AGS? These are important questions to be addressed. In the links section I included traditional research links as well as a list of YouTube videos on the subject including a great one from Dr. Ken D. Berry. EXACTLY WHAT IS ALPHA-GAL SYNDROME? Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), also known as alpha-gal allergy or red meat allergy, is a serious, potentially life-threatening allergic condition triggered by the sugar molecule galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal). This molecule is found in most mammals (like cows, pigs, sheep) but not in humans or birds/fish. cdc.gov Causes It typically develops after a bite from certain ticks, most commonly the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) in the United States. The tickās saliva introduces alpha-gal into the bloodstream, which can sensitize the immune system in some people, leading it to produce IgE antibodies against alpha-gal. cdc.gov ⢠Not everyone bitten by a lone star tick develops AGS. ⢠Other ticks (in different regions) can also trigger it. ⢠Further tick bites can worsen the allergy by increasing antibody levels. my.clevelandclinic.org Symptoms Reactions are often delayed, starting 2ā6 hours (sometimes up to 10 hours) after eating mammalian meat or exposure to other alpha-gal sources. This delay can make diagnosis tricky. mayoclinic.org Common symptoms include: ⢠Hives, itching, or flushing ⢠Swelling (lips, face, throat, eyelids) ⢠Wheezing, shortness of breath, or cough ⢠Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or heartburn ⢠Dizziness, fainting, or in severe cases, anaphylaxis (a life-threatening reaction with airway constriction and blood pressure drop) my.clevelandclinic.org
