Members will learn how to recognize a compliant journal, properly maintain and safeguard it, respond to loss or theft, preserve completed journals, and plan for lawful handling of records after a commission ends or in the event of death.

Chapter 5 – The Official Notary Seal covers the legal requirements for a New Jersey notary’s stamp, the optional embosser, proper placement and use of the seal, and the critical responsibilities of securing, protecting, and destroying notary seals to prevent misuse and fraud.

This chapter covers the Verification on Oath or Affirmation, a specialized notarial act where spoken testimony is captured and converted into a sworn written record. You'll learn its four core elements, how it fundamentally differs from a jurat in sequence and purpose, and the detailed procedures for administering it, including your role in ensuring an accurate record. This act is rare outside of legal and judicial settings.

This chapter covers the notarial act of signature witnessing. You learn to certify that you personally watched someone sign a document. It focuses on three key rules: the signer must be present, you must check their ID, and you must use the correct notary certificate.
