Welcome
Hey all
So......
Question: Why are we here?
Answer: I don't mean why do we exist, simply, we are here to learn about pickleball and how to get better.
Question: But WHY here?
Answer: We LOVE pickleball....... Obvs
Question: But why HERE?
Answer: Let's face it - if I go looking for pickleball stuff on Facebook, I'll be bombarded with ads for things I didn't even know I needed to know about or things I just HAVE to buy, or find out that Sue has been on holiday with Clive and they took their miniature schnauzer to the beach. I'm easily distracted by something shiny and lose focus on getting better at my third shot drop.... and I really need to nail that third shot drop.... although that miniature schnauzer is kinda cute..... Oh man, a miniature schnauzer is going to cost a fortune..... quick....close Facebook......Open Youtube.... Wow, look at that, a free to use platform that tells me everything I need to do. All at once. At the 3.5 level, 4.0 level, 4.5 level - oh god.... they're all so good and everything works first time and I still don't know a Nasty Nelson from an Ernie (wait, isn't he in the Muppets...), or a body bag from a Body Shop bag... do they still exist by the way????
So this is intended to break....it....down. Make it easy to focus on one thing at a time. Deconstruct the point, work on little things, repeat it, get better over time and make it sustainable.
We're going to eat an elephant.
The metaphor "eating an elephant" means that large, overwhelming, or impossible-looking tasks can be accomplished if you break them down into small, manageable pieces and tackle them gradually.
To break down the metaphor and apply it to your own goals:
  • The Core Meaning: Just as it is physically impossible to swallow an elephant whole, trying to complete a massive project (like writing a novel, paying off debt, or getting better at pickleball) all at once will only lead to burnout and anxiety.
  • The Strategy: Success comes from chunking. By focusing on small, actionable steps—or just improving by "1% a day"—you build momentum and eventually finish the entire project
  • The Psychology: Celebrating small, consistent victories relieves psychological pressure and keeps you motivated rather than fixating on the intimidating final goal.
Question: So why here with Moonshot? (Who is Moonshot by the way)
Answer: We're amateurs, a group of people with the same passion in life, playing pickleball. We're starting off, wanting to improve, meet likeminded people, talking about pickleball, playing pickleball, drilling pickleball (really???? Yes really....we need to drill.... then play rec, then play friendly tournaments, and festivals, and regional tournements, and national tournaments, and go on pickleball holidays....).
We'll support each other, encourage, coach a little (if our partner wants it), make notes on what we want to achieve EVERY session. We're based in Greater Manchester - Anthony H. Wilson ("Mr Manchester") was a journalist, television presenter, and Factory Records founder whose life and career were defined by his passionate dedication to Manchester. He championed the city as a uniquely human center of culture, even when it was economically depressed, advocating tirelessly for its music and arts scene - we're the pickleball version.....
His celebrated commentary on Manchester spanned a few famous sentiments—some strictly real, and one popularized by cinema:
  • The Cinema Catchphrase: "This is Manchester, we do things differently here." While endlessly repeated as a mantra for the city and a tribute to Wilson, this quote was actually written by screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce and spoken by actor Steve Coogan playing Wilson in the film 24 Hour Party People. Nevertheless - it's true
  • The Need for Youth Facilities: He was a huge proponent of giving the region's youth the best spaces possible, noting that Manchester was an important city historically and needed to provide facilities on par with New York or Paris so young people wouldn't be left at a disadvantage.
  • Although pickleball isn't particularly well-known for being a youth sport, it could be, it should be and it can be. We can help with that as a collective, a week/month/year at a time.
Moonshot means: An ambitious, highly innovative, and seemingly impossible project or goal that pushes the boundaries of current capabilities. The term originates from the historic 1969 Apollo mission to the Moon and is now widely used in technology, business, and science to describe solving massive problems with radical solutions.
This is our mission - together, we can play, improve, include others and grow the sport we all love. Whilst having fun, sharing our ups and downs (particularly where our DUPR rating is concerned) we are going to get out there and play beyond limits.
I might even get in front of a camera and speak....lord only knows how that's going to go.... I need Scotty to do that (hang on, how much does a bleep machine cost - I'll check Facebook for advice...... oh god, there's Sue and the mini schnauzer again......)
Content will drop as and when time allows, with the aim for having 'quite a lot' up and running from September onwards.....
See you on the other side.....
