Memorial Weekend - A Meaningful Moment
The Vibe: To Honoring our fallen heroes who served this country.
Hey everyone,
Let’s be honest. It is incredibly easy to treat this weekend as just a three-day pass for backyard BBQ, opening the pool, kick off to School’s summer recess for some. Grilling, drinking, and catching up on sleep. Summer is kicking off, and the vibes are great.
But it is also easy to forget what this weekend actually costs.
Memorial Day isn't Veterans Day. It isn't a general thank-you to the military. It is a day specifically dedicated to the men and women who went to work in a uniform and never came home.
Years ago, oh geez I was in my early 30’s, I attended a relative’s weekend BBQ. He was a WWII veteran, and he had what he called a Remembrance Table. He had a table near the back door of the house. Somewhat away from where we were all gathering and having a good time. It had a simple white tablecloth, a single candle, and a framed sign.
Now I’m not sure I remember the exact wording but I'll frame it like this:
Before the burgers and the beer, take one minute.
Memorial Day is for the ones who gave up all their tomorrows so we could have today.
If you know someone who made the ultimate sacrifice, write their name down on a card and light the candle. If you don't, just pause, take a breath, and remember that our freedom was paid for in advance
He had some index cards laid out and some pencils. That was all.
I never forgot that weekend party. While I never replicated his Remembrance Table, this weekend always brings me back to the moment I read that card and felt respect for all that gave their lives for me to be in that moment.
🕒 The 3:00 PM Pause
At 3:00 PM local time on Monday, the National Moment of Remembrance happens. Turn off the music for exactly 60 seconds. You don't need to give a speech. Just tell your guests, "Hey, we're taking one minute of silence for the fallen."
It’s a tiny speed bump in a long weekend, but it keeps the purpose alive.
