This week’s find is something I’m pretty excited about—green Peridot crystals hosted in dark Basalt, found right here near Nelson, BC.
You can see that nice olive-green color popping out of the darker volcanic rock—this is what I love about field collecting. That contrast makes it stand out once you know what to look for.
What’s going on here?
This type of formation comes from magma that cooled quickly at the surface. The peridot (which is actually gem-quality Olivine) crystallized earlier deep in the magma and got carried up during volcanic activity, ending up locked inside the basalt
What to look for in the field:
Dark volcanic rock (basalt flows)
Small green crystal pockets or weathered-out grains
Areas with past volcanic activity or lava flows
👉 A lot of people walk right past this stuff without noticing it—once your eye is trained, you start spotting green flashes everywhere.
Now I want to see YOUR finds 👇
Drop a photo of what you found this week—crystals, gold, rocks, anything from the field. Let’s see what everyone’s uncovering out there!
