This weekend I was reminded about the very first positive psychology books I ever read, The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. Having re-read the book I maintain this to be one of the best self help books out there and I am so grateful it was the book that 'popped my cherry' into this world of self improvement. Before I read that book I didn't like/rolled my eyes at the idea of improving ones mindset/ self, so if you are in that same place, I get it. I saw reading these books as some kind of weakness, but the truth is admitting you need some help is no bad thing.
I was gifted this book while on tour with the Army in Afghanistan, I was thinking about investing into property for the first time. The guy who gave me the book was already invested in property and enrolled me into reading the book. What I learnt didn't just apply to property investing. It changed the trajectory of my life.
At the time I smoked, I couldn't do a pull up, I wasn't particularly fit, I had never seen my abs.
One of the principles that stood out to me what this idea of things being easy to do and easy not to do. I was in the mindset that achieving these big things were impossible for me. But the truth of the matter is that if one human being can do it, so can another. It boils down to the realisation that there are set of simple easy to do decisions that need to be made and executed on a daily basis.
It is easy to say no to a cigarette once.
It is easy to have a salad rather than chips once.
It is easy to invest a small about of money into a savings account once.
It is easy to go for a workout...
So why dont we do it?
Because we are focused on the end result, not the process of getting there.
Collectively as a society we have forgotten that time is on our side.
We have forgotten that things take time to materialise.
We live in an instant gratification world were we click a button and things appear, the quicker the better, sometimes my internet deliveries arrive on the same day!
The problem with most of the things that we really want...
- A great body
- Deep and meaningful relationships
- Happier lives
Is that they can not be delivered to us by the click of a button.
In fact the route to achieving these things is not very exciting at all.
It can be quite boring.
But that is not a reason to not do them, because the PESUIT of these things will make us happier (the science reports).
Problem is, most of us are not pursuing it, we just want it.
And
We are NOT doing the work required.
Perhaps it sounds like I am having a go, judging even.
I am not.
I want you to awaken to the same fact that I awaked too almost 10 years ago.
The result will come.
If you do the work.
The work is not difficult, if I can do it anyone can
The work is simple.
Its the decision to do a workout today.
Its the decision to make a sales call today.
Its the decision to express your gratitude today.
The list goes on.
and yes
Tomorrow you will have to do the same, but the trick is to focus on the now and what is going on now.
Over time your decisions will compound. You will get interest on your interest and your investment will grow exponentially.
It has been said that this is one of the most powerful forces in nature, it can work for you and against you, you are never just plodding along, things are always in flux, just very small flux.
Which direction are you going?
