Good morning.
It’s Wednesday, September 24th, 2025.
There are 98 days left in the year.
In personal finance, there are precious few places where Uncle Sam steps aside and says: keep it all. The Health Savings Account (HSA) is one of them.
Here’s why I call it the “triple crown” of tax benefits:
1. Tax-free contributions – Money goes in before taxes.
2. Tax-free growth – Invest it, and gains compound tax-deferred.
3. Tax-free withdrawals – Use it for qualified medical expenses, and it comes out free.
That’s the hat trick.
Who’s using them?
• Roughly 36 million Americans have HSAs today.
• But only about 7% actually invest the funds for long-term growth. Most just let the money sit in cash.
• Meanwhile, an estimated 90%+ of Americans will face significant medical expenses in retirement, from deductibles to premiums to Medigap coverage. HSAs could be their tax-free lifeline.
The fine print
• To open one, you must pair it with a high-deductible health plan—the safety net for bigger, costlier events.
• Contribution limits for 2025 are $4,300 for individuals and $8,550 for families, with a $1,000 catch-up if you’re over 55.
• Unlike Flexible Spending Accounts, HSAs roll over year after year. Build it once, and it’s yours for life.
My Four Pillars of Financial Freedom
In my book, the foundation of a solid financial life is:
1. Owning your home, free and clear
2. Eliminating consumer debt
3. A well-funded HSA for health expenses
4. At least $1M in after-tax retirement savings
Bonus round: Add long-term care coverage, especially for expensive medical events like Alzheimer’s. That’s real peace of mind.
Why this matters
Imagine hitting retirement with not only a mortgage-free home and debt-free living, but also a dedicated, tax-free bucket to cover health costs. That’s freedom. That’s confidence. That’s millionaireME.
💡 Call to action: If you’ve got an HSA, don’t just fund it—invest it. If you don’t have one, ask whether a high-deductible plan makes sense. Tax-free is rare. Grab it when you can.
