Canal Zone Brat
Hi! I was born in the Canal Zone, Panama. My Dad retired from the Army while stationed in Panama. Although I could not join the military, I went to work for DoD and recently retired after 40+ years. My husband is also retired Army. I miss my days as a Brat in the Canal Zone.

The Static That Shaped Our Soundtrack
🎶 Growing up as a military brat meant our soundtrack was unlike anyone else’s. Thanks to Armed Forces Radio, we didn’t have a set “format” like Top 40 or country or R&B. Instead, we got everything. Rock, soul, country, jazz, disco, classical, oldies—you name it, they played it. Why? Because the mission wasn’t to cater to one group of listeners—it was to give every soldier, from every corner of the country, a taste of home. And in the process, we brats ended up with some of the most eclectic, diverse musical tastes you’ll ever find. Looking back, I realize those static-filled broadcasts weren’t just background noise… they were the bridge that connected us to home and exposed us to sounds we might never have discovered otherwise. 💿 What’s a song or artist you first heard on Armed Forces Radio that still brings back memories today?
