🔬 Friday Bench Tip | Streptococcus pyogenes 🦠
💡 Did you know?
Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus) is typically beta-hemolytic on blood agar, producing a clear zone around its colonies. 🧫
But here’s something important to remember!
👀 Not all beta-hemolytic streptococci are Group A!
Other streptococci, including S. agalactiae (Group B), can also produce beta hemolysis.
🧪 That’s why additional identification testing is important when differentiating these organisms.
⚠️ Bench Reminder: Hemolysis helps narrow down your possibilities, but it doesn’t confirm the organism’s identity!
🧠 Takeaway: Think of blood agar as your starting clue, not your final answer!
