"Refined by Fire: A Reflection on Neurodivergence, Healing, and Awakening"
Author: John Ryan Miller PMA: Meraki Fellowship
Introduction: When Trauma Reveals Design
Some people walk through cancer. Some walk through injustice. I walked through both. And I didn’t come out the same man.
What emerged on the other side of radiation, chemotherapy, stem cell replacement, and the weaponization of government process against me wasn’t a broken version of who I was—it was a refined version. One more alert, more discerning, more precise, more spiritually sensitive.
This reflection is not medical advice. It’s not diagnostic. It’s an invitation to understand what happens when your mind survives what your body wasn’t expected to. It’s written for:
  • The neurodivergent adult who always felt "different"
  • The spouse trying to love them well
  • The PMA community members who need language for their own unseen awakenings
  • And anyone who has walked through the fire and emerged more aware than ever
Neurodivergence Wasn’t New. But Awareness Was.
I’ve always been wired differently. My wife knew it 37 years ago when we started dating. She called it "adorkable," but what she saw was the early signs of what would later be understood as AuDHD: a dual-wiring of Autism Spectrum cognition and ADHD functionality.
But after treatment, something shifted.
  • Noise became unbearable, yet silence became productive.
  • Injustice became not just noticeable, but viscerally obvious.
  • My executive functioning, once tangled in social obligation, now found laser focus.
  • Peaks became revelations. Valleys became patterns.
Can Medical Trauma Trigger Neurological Awakening?
Yes. And not just in theory.
Scientific studies confirm that:
  • Chemotherapy, radiation, and stem cell therapy alter neurotransmitter levels
  • Neuroinflammation can awaken previously suppressed cognitive pathways
  • Survivors often report heightened perception, emotional intensity, and even spiritual clarity
  • Not speaking to the heart wiring issues AVRD.
Your body is rewiring. Your mind isn’t malfunctioning. It’s reorganizing. And that reorganization often pulls forward parts of you that the world taught you to suppress.
You Are Not Broken. You Are Awakened.
The world rewards conformity. Neurodivergence, particularly when activated by trauma, doesn’t conform. It reveals. It unmasks. It discerns.
And that can be lonely.
But it is also sacred.
When God designs a mind to see beneath the surface, and then refines it through fire, what emerges is not someone who fits in—but someone who leads.
You may feel:
  • More sensitive to manipulation
  • Less tolerant of hypocrisy
  • Drawn to scripture, truth, and unfiltered justice with intensity
This is not dysfunction. It is CALLING
A Word to the PMA Community
Many in our PMA carry this same fire. They are neurodivergent. Spiritually wired. Quietly intense. They have survived trauma and now speak truth others are afraid to name.
This guide is for you to understand:
  • You are not alone.
  • You are not mentally ill.
  • You are mentally awake.
And in a world built on illusion, that awakening is not a liability. It’s a spiritual inheritance.
Closing Reflection
You may have walked through cancer, courtrooms, or catastrophic betrayal. And now you see everything differently.
Good.
You were never meant to sleep through life. You were meant to stand.
And now you will help others do the same.
"See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction." — Isaiah 48:10
