I Got Kicked Out of My House in 4 Days
How’s it going?
I’ve been a bit absent. I’ve had a difficult and eventful week.
I’ll tell you what happened, and if you’d like, you can share something you went through this week too. I read every comment.
so...
I got kicked out of my house.
Yep.
My fiancée and I rented a large apartment because we both work from home and need space, privacy, and time to focus.
A friend of a friend offered to rent us a house he was selling. The property had belonged to his relatives, who had passed away.
At the beginning, we agreed on a few simple things. We knew there would be viewings from the estate agency because the house was on the market. We only asked for one thing: at least two days' notice before any viewing, for privacy and work reasons.
When we moved in, there were a few things we weren't told. But we trusted them.
For example, the house next door is a residential care home for people with serious mental health issues, some of whom may also have a criminal background. The morning after we moved in, we woke up to loud music blasting through the walls. There are often screams. There is often chaos. People regularly have to intervene to defuse situations.
Not ideal, but at that point we were already living there.
The first couple of weeks passed without major issues. Then something unexpected happened.
The viewings started increasing, and we were often informed at very short notice.
A few days ago, I read a message only that morning saying that someone would be coming to view the property in an hour.
We contacted the estate agent and explained that we couldn't manage viewings this way. She told us she understood and that, moving forward, she would personally make sure we had proper notice before any sales appointments.
That wasn't true.
The owner — the friend of my friend — called me, angry. He said the arrangement wasn't going to work and that I had to leave.
Immediately.
Because there was no formal tenancy agreement, I had no real choice. I was given four days.
For us, moving isn't easy. Our work schedules are demanding, and the news created stress and tension in my relationship. We argued. Then my girlfriend and I made peace because, at that point, we had a much bigger problem: finding somewhere to live within two or three days.
The whole situation left a mark on me.
Maybe it's cultural, but where I come from, hospitality means something. You don't throw people out this brutally over something so small.
I would understand if we had caused damage, created problems, or done something dangerous.
But all we did was stand by the only request we made from day one: please give us a little notice before sending strangers into the house.
The last two days have been genuinely discouraging.
The kind of days that make you lose faith in people.
I've also had to spend a lot of money because when you're given only four days, your only realistic option is often an Airbnb — and during high season, the prices are ridiculous.
What about you?
What would you have done in my position?
How would you have reacted?
I was honestly so shocked by the situation that I simply accepted it and told my partner:
"I don't want to spend another minute in this house. Not after the way we've been treated."
ps When we took the apartment, 1 month ago, this acquaintance told me that the property had been on the market for over a year and that viewings were rare.
That's one of the main reasons we agreed to move in.
Later, however, we found out that he had at some point had to reduce the asking price by £80,000, and that the property may even be repossessed or sold at auction.
So, on one hand, I can understand that he may be under a lot of pressure and feeling desperate.
On the other hand, I would never treat someone this way if they were paying me rent—unless they had genuinely done something dishonest, dangerous, or seriously wrong.
