I'm sure you've all seen the snow fences on 203 on the outskirts of town, and perhaps you've also seen the ones on 395 just north of the 203. I was always under the impression that they were designed to capture snow in front of the fence, but this video explains how they work. The open fences disrupt the wind and causes the snow to mound behind the fence. Kinda cool video from an engineering perspective. The video specifically talks about Wyoming snow fences but I'm guessing they're all functionally the same.
