Data Analytics Project 16 : Power BI Earthquakes Report
This is a comprehensive data visualization project analyzing global seismic activity from 1900 to 2014. By transforming raw data into interactive insights, this dashboard provides a deep dive into earthquake frequency, magnitude, and geographic concentration, offering a clear perspective on one of nature’s most unpredictable phenomena.
The report highlights critical KPIs, including a Total of 754 Earthquakes analyzed with an Average Magnitude of 6.71. One of the most striking findings is the geographic concentration of activity; the Vanuatu region stands out as a dominant hotspot, accounting for over 67% of the recorded events. Furthermore, the temporal analysis reveals that March historically experienced the highest seismic activity with 94 recorded events.
From a technical standpoint, I utilized Histograms and Scatter Plots to uncover the relationship between depth and intensity. The data shows that the majority of earthquakes are shallow-focus (0–100 km), which typically poses the highest risk to infrastructure. By examining the distribution of magnitudes, the report confirms that magnitude 6.0 and 7.0 events are the most frequent in this high-intensity dataset, emphasizing the need for robust disaster preparedness.
This project was built using Power BI, leveraging DAX for custom metrics and Power Query for data transformation. It features interactive slicers for magnitude types and timeframes, allowing users to conduct their own exploratory analysis. I’m looking forward to applying these data storytelling techniques to more complex global datasets in the future!
