Every Note Has a Personality
Yesterday we learned that scales are maps.
Today we're meeting the people who live in that neighborhood.
Every note has its own personality.
Some feel calm.
Some feel energetic.
Some feel mysterious.
Some almost beg to move somewhere else.
If you've ever wondered why two musicians can play the exact same scale but sound completely different...
This is why.
Great musicians aren't thinking:
"I'm playing the fifth note."
They're hearing:
"This note feels strong."
Theory becomes much easier when you stop memorizing numbers and start recognizing personalities.
Today's Challenge
Play a scale.
Pause on each note for several seconds.
Describe each one using only words.
Examples:
  • peaceful
  • bright
  • hopeful
  • nervous
  • dramatic
  • unfinished
  • confident
There are no wrong answers.
We're training our ears, not taking a test.
