How is everyone this monday morning? How was your weekend? Each week we work toward something, whether it be the weekend, completing a task/project, or really just surviving one more week. What is it that your working on this week?

Move Away from Home Composition focus: Create motion. Today, your job is to leave home. Write a short phrase that: - starts on home - moves away - does NOT resolve back yet Example: C – D – E – F – G End on a note that feels unfinished. If it feels slightly uncomfortable, you’re doing it right. The unfinished phrase will feel like its leading you somewhere.

Choose Your Home (Key Center) Composition focus: Establish tonality. Pick one note to be home. This note should feel stable, like the music could stop there and feel complete. Example: Home note = C Play or write a short idea that starts and ends on C Example notes: C – E – G – E – C Don’t worry about rhythm yet. Just make home feel obvious.

Something I am going to try here starting today. For those that are into composition each day I am going to walk through a basic process step by step with some examples. By the end of the seven days you will have written a short original composition piece that will help build skills and confidence. So let's give it a try together......

The technical grouping for an instrument that produces sound by using air is called an "Aerophone". Saxes fall into this category. This is just something that was brought to my attention by one of my students. Thought I'd share it here. 😆
