The Power
The power of English!
Me and my wife often go out for a meal (living in China, many people eat out) and we go to our favourite Muslim place on the next block. The staff are getting to know us very well and they are becoming very friendly, not so much with me as my Chinese is very limited. It can get quite busy some times so it shows the food is good ( Chinese say "if the place is full, the food is good"), i am i guess the only foreigner that goes there.
Anyway, one day a foreign couple came in and sat down to order food. It was a little strange as we live far from any tourist attractions, and seeing foreigners here is a little out of the ordinary. Me and my wife continued to eat our meal and i would glance across every so often in the hope i could hear their accent and know where they were from.
There seemed to be a little problem as they were using a translator (and as we all know, they aren't the best), the waitress glanced over at us with a smile. It was then that i knew that she needed help and i nudged my wife and told her they need help, the wife didn't hesitate and went over straight away.
The Americans wanted to make sure the food they ordered wasn't too spice, and my wife translated it to the waitress who was very pleased my wife was there to help. After we finished we paid our bill and my wife told the waitress that if it happens again to call her on weixin and she will help out.
So by learning English, you become much better than any translator and even if you struggle it's much more helpful to them that you are trying. English is the language of communication and no matter where you go in the world, there is going to be someone who speak it.
True story! 👍
