Futuyu Great Wall
Drawn by a black-and-white photograph taken in 1937, I visited the Futuyu Great Wall in Laiyuan, Hebei, during the National Day holiday. Though not as grand and imposing as Badaling Great Wall, it stands firm with unyielding mettle.
In 1451, the Ming Dynasty built the initial wall sections and fortresses here to fend off raids by nomadic tribes from the north. From 1573 to 1574, extensive expansions followed, adding watchtowers, beacon towers and ramparts to forge a complete three-dimensional defense system.
After the full-scale War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression broke out in 1937, the Futuyu Great Wall became part of the core area of the Jincha Ji Anti-Japanese Base Area. Its ancient watchtowers and rocky outcrops served as natural fortifications for the Eighth Route Army to hold off Japanese troops and launch guerrilla warfare.
Today, the mountains are blanketed in lush green, leaving only peaceful, tranquil landscapes stretching far and wide
