When To Plant?
This is one of the biggest things people get wrong, and was my biggest learning experience. When I moved to the tropics about 20 years ago, I planted my first garden in the spring. But soon my great hopes turned to a rotting, stinking mess with the beginning of the rainy season. It took me almost a year to adapt to the climate and the help of some living locals and a long dead English man who took the time to write a phenomenal book about gardening in the tropics. My biggest takeaway, plants won't produce when planted at the wrong time. That also goes for all of us in temperate climates. We started with a small harvest yesterday (excluding asparagus) because we planted our beets and brocolli back in mid March (zone 7b.) Many people are just planting when they should be harvesting. Check with your local extension office or gardening group to get your local planting times.

Gardening begins!
For those of you in the Northern Hemisphere its time to start thinking of planting your garden. We have already started a LOT of plant starts indoors. But some things can go out in the garden RIGHT NOW, even in Zone 7, where we are. The first things to plant in the spring are: Spinach Garden Peas Mustards Chard All of these can take cold weather. We have had our pea plants buried in the snow before, and they did great. Only the blossoms are damaged by frost, and it will be 8 weeks before they start to blossom. If we don't plant our garden peas now, we will never get a good harvest. Our spring cool season is very short. The humid, hot summer comes quickly around here, and the peas just mildew out and die. We have to plant a fast-growing variety, or we will not get a harvest. We still have one bag from last year!
