Two Basic and Core Skills to practice. Useful skills to practice. 1. Being Fully Present, this means giving the speaker your full attention. This not only improved your ability to fully understand what the speaker is saying but reassures the speaker that they are actually being heard. If you have any doubt you are correctly understanding what the speaker is conveying to you, it is ok to ask for clarification.. A common barrier to this process is prematurely preparing a response before the speaker has finished talking. This can lead to misunderstandings during the transaction, in both personal and professional settings the perception and sharing of information must be correct to maintain an accurate and healthy interaction between participating individuals. 2. Be mindful of non verbal aspects of the communication process. Avoid physical barriers such as phones. laptops, folders anything that could create a percieved barrier either consciosly or sub consciusly. it is suggestd that during an interaction that has emotional value as littite as 7% could be the actual verbal content. Tone and body language making up the rest of the actual information being shared. A useful acronym for aiding in healthy commication that was created by Gerard Egan is S.O.L.E.R Sit Squarely (Face the other person to demostrate availability)Open posture (avoid crossed arms or legs to help convey receptiveness)Lean forward (This helps to demonstrate genuine interest, in turn reassuring the speaker of full engagement)Eye contact (Maintain an appropriate level of eye contact, avoiding prolonged or too short span of contact)Relax (Helps to create a comfortable and natural feel to the transaction)These 2 very basic skills can enrich communications and enhance awarenes
