Limitless Men – Vision, Order & Legacy
Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, Limitless Men, wherever you are around the world.
I wanted to share something that happened recently which really touched me and provoked me to reflect.
A good friend of mine, who is a minister of the Gospel, recently lost a relative after a very short illness. He left behind a wife and four children. My friend reached out and shared some of the difficulties the family was facing following this unexpected loss.
I sent what little I could to support them—what I would describe as my own “widow’s mite.” What really touched me, however, was the magnitude of their appreciation. My friend thanked me, his wife personally called to express her gratitude, and I even had an opportunity to speak briefly with the bereaved wife.
Considering the grief they were going through, their response to what I considered a small contribution really moved me.
Afterwards, I went for a prayer walk, reflecting and praying about the whole situation. It impressed deeply upon my heart and provoked me to reflect on three things:
Vision. Order. Legacy.
I thought about King Hezekiah, when the prophet Isaiah came to him with the word:
“Put your house in order…” — Isaiah 38:1
What struck me was that Hezekiah was a king. We might naturally assume that, as a king, everything would already have been in order. Yet he was still instructed to put his house in order because his time on earth was coming to an end.
Hezekiah had the privilege of receiving a warning and was subsequently granted additional years. But not everyone receives such an opportunity.
I also reflected on Genesis 1, where the earth was without form and void. God spoke, and what was without form began to have order, structure, purpose and function. It reminded me of the importance of order and intentionality in our own lives and families.
This led me to ask myself a very personal question:
If life unexpectedly happened to me today, is my house truly in order?
As men, particularly where our families depend heavily upon us, our vision cannot simply be about what we hope to accomplish during our lifetime. There should also be something that provides direction, stability and continuity beyond us.
Not everyone will receive Hezekiah’s warning. Sometimes life changes suddenly. Even where there is some warning, the time available to prepare may be very limited.
So, Limitless Men, perhaps this is a conversation worth having:
If each of us were told today, “Put your house in order,” what would that practically mean?
What should we already be putting in place concerning our spiritual leadership, family vision, wills and succession, finances and insurance, important documents, emergency planning, and preparing the next generation?
And perhaps the deeper question is:
If we were suddenly no longer here, would our families know the vision? Would they know where everything is? Would they know what to do next? And would they be equipped to continue what has been entrusted to us?
Perhaps this should go beyond discussion and cause each of us to examine what practical steps we need to take towards putting our houses in order—spiritually, financially, practically and generationally.
May God grant us wisdom to have vision, establish order, and build a legacy that can continue beyond our lifetime.
