People often see the end result, but they don’t always see the journey behind it. 😢 At 21, I was told I was too old to become a teacher because I hadn’t completed my A-levels - for various life reasons. For a long time, I believed that dream had passed me by. ✨️ Then, at 28, I met a lady at a baby group who completely changed my mindset. She was 40 years old, raising four children, and studying for a degree in social care. Around the same time, I saw Matthew Kelly speaking about studying through the Open University later in life, and something just clicked — maybe it wasn’t too late after all. 👩🎓 So, I took the leap and started my degree in Mathematics and Its Learning. 📚 Those five years were some of the hardest — and most rewarding — of my life. During that time, I worked full time, had another child, relocated, planned a wedding, and got married just weeks before beginning my teacher training… with my new name as Mrs Varley. 💪 There were countless late nights, missed social events, moments of exhaustion, and times I questioned myself. But when you want something enough, you persevere. 💫 That journey is one of the reasons I care so deeply about the students I work with today. Over the years, I’ve helped so many young people who started with low confidence, low grades, and low aspirations begin to believe in themselves again and achieve things they never thought possible. 💞 One of the greatest joys of my career is hearing from former students long after they’ve left school and learning about how well they’re doing. Knowing I played even a small part in helping them believe they could succeed means everything to me. 🛣 My journey is still ongoing, and there will always be more students to help and inspire. But it all starts with one simple belief: that you can. 👩🏻🏫 🫶 Seeing that shift in mindset in each and every student is exactly why I love what I do.
