During six years of isolation and hardship, he turned deeply toward his faith. He eventually escaped after a vision told him a ship was ready to take him home. However, he didn't stay away. He had another vision of the Irish people calling him back. He returned as a missionary, blending Christian teachings with existing Irish traditions to help the people understand the Gospel.
